Before his tragic death at the age of 21, Hugh Mundell was a rising star in Jamaica’s burgeoning reggae scene. In 1976, the Kingston native released the single “Africa Must Be Free By 1983”, produced by dub legend Augustus Pablo. The song would eventually become the title track on Mundell’s classic debut album, released through Pablo’s iconic label Rockers.
Now, Nature Sounds is partnering with Augustus Pablo’s family for a limited-edition Africa-shaped vinyl picture disc highlighting this indelible track. Written by Hugh Mundell and recorded when the famed singer was just 14 years old, “Africa Must Be Free By 1983” is an uplifting anthem steeped in the Pan-African ideals Mundell championed during his brief but memorable career. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Rockers, this historic single is receiving a dazzling new deluxe vinyl pressing, complete with two rare Augustus Pablo dub mixes on the B-Side.

No huge thanklist this time, there would be too many people to be mentioned here and there are only 8 pages to fill on this booklet. But we know who you are, and you know who we are so there’s no greater value in putting this out on a ‚list‘, is there?

HYPNOS 69 – The Eclectic Measure
„The Eclectic Measure“ is based on Carl Jung’s „The Seven Sermons to the Dead“ The Seven Sermons deal with the self as the androgynous being Abraxas, with the message that self-knowledge may be attained by the conscious assimilation of the contents of the subconscious, in order to achieve unity. It’s about the search in life so many people subconsciously feel they have to do, but don’t know where or how to start with. It’s far from easy to step away from a certain ‚lifestyle‘ and rearrange everything you’ve been doing and thinking since you’ve been born. The very first rule; such as in art is you have to ‚destroy in order to create‘. „The Eclectic Measure“ is about opposites, poles, equilibrium, the sun and the moon, good and evil, destroy and create, … When you’ve walked the path of subconsciousness and counted all the stones on your way you’ll find what you’ve been looking for. Abraxas is in all of us.
